Sometimes we forget that Property Managers are people too. They are real people with families, problems, situations and events that happen in their lives, just like the rest of us.
The Property Manager takes “the hits” to protect the Board of Directors and the association. They do this without any real authority, as the Board always has the final say. But to the unknowing public, many residents, contractors, and real estate brokers it is the manager that is the “problem” and the Property Manager takes the blame for it all.
Like most of us, Property Managers are overworked and underpaid for what they do, day in and day out, 24/7. They start their day early and if they have a meeting or an emergency to attend to, they may get home very late. Not many are qualified to do this type of work and sometimes they are not treated very well, as they are the messenger of bad or difficult news to many.
The next time your manager has a family issue to attend to, is exhausted from the work load, or is having a difficult time with a problem, a gentle hand, some comp time off or heartfelt “thank you” is all it takes to get that Property Manager up and going again.
Despite all of the negatives, they love the challenge of what they do. Next time, just remember that Property Managers are people too!
